The Detroit Red Wings assistant general manager, Jim Nill, told La Presse that they were interested in signing Mikael Johansson. Jim Nill said :
"We had the rights on him, but he has not developped enough to sign a contract with us. He became unrestricted free agent, but his habilities continued to progress. Today he has become a legitimate prospect."
The Wings later wanted to sign him as a UFA, but Mikael Johansson believed that he has better opportunity with other teams.
